25 More Days of Old Time Radio Christmas - Day 12: Borrowing a Sleigh for Caroling with Lucille Ball and My Favorite Husband (1949)

Sometimes you need a good  bit of decorating to get you in the holiday spirit.  Certainly you are going to need a tree, and some garland.  But if you want to go all in, you are going to need something big...maybe, a sleigh.  That would be just the thing to get you in the holiday spirit.  Or this is what Lucille Ball thought as Liz Cooper on My Favorite Husband.  If you have Sirius/XM, you can listen to Greg Bell's Old time radio channel (#148).  He does a great job of showcasing great holiday themed episodes, especially as we get close to Christmas.

My Favorite Husband is the first staring vehicle for Lucille Ball, the great comedienne who was best know on TV for I Love Lucy.  The series was loosely based on Isabel Scott Rorick's humorous books, most notably Mr. and Mrs. Cugat.  For the series, the names would be changed to Cooper.  Broadcast over the CBS Network, the radio show starred Lucille Ball as Liz Cooper and Richard Denning as her husband George Cooper.  They were, as their billing would indicate, "two people who live together and like it." The show was sponsored by Jell-O, though I doubt you would have trouble figuring that out if you listen to the program. Running on the air from 1948 through 1951, the year that  I Love Lucy was first broadcast over television.  This is a fun show and definitely catches Lucille Ball in fine form as one of the greatest comediennes that the United States have produced!

I have featured this wonderful series twice before -  Lucille Ball Knits a Sweater & Christmas Card Pictures. On this episode that aired on December 23rd, 1949, Liz is trying to get George to go caroling in their neighborhood.  However, he insisted that the only way that they would go caroling is if she could get a sleigh.  Sure thing - no problem - right on it.  So Liz thought.  Turns out - renting a sleigh is a harder thing to do than she planed on.  But her determination is what drives the episode.  When she finally finds one, there is no one there to arrange the loan of the sleigh.  So she borrowed it to create the perfect old fashioned Christmas.  What could go wrong???  Joining Lucille Ball and  Richard Denning are Hans Conried, Ruth Perrott, Peter Leeds, and Frank Nelson.
