Well I need to mix this up and start off with a series I have not used before.  I also need to catch up - so I am killing two birds with one stone.  Maybe that is not the best reference to introduce this series  I have been meaning to write about for some time.   If you have Sirius/XM, you can listen to Greg Bell's Old time radio channel (#148).  He does a great job of showcasing great holiday themed episodes, especially as we get close to Christmas.

The Adventures of the Falcon was a great mystery-detective series that aired on a variety of networks from 1943 through 1954.  The Falcon is none other than Michael Waring and was the creation of Drexel Drake (a pseudonym of Charles H. Huff).  Mike Waring is a investigator, troubleshooter and all around good guy who was the subject of a few novels, stories, films and this radio program.    The two most famous actors to play Mike Waring were Les Tremayne and Les Damon.  While the history of the series can be confusing, there is a great write up on the Digital Deli.

That takes us to Christmas Eve, 1950 with our episode, the Unwelcome Christmas Present.  This aired over the NBC Network and we have Les Damon is the title role as Mike Waring.  The story unfolds two days before Christmas.  People were shopping all over town when Larry Sterling was approached on the street to see if he wanted to buy a silver fox coat for only $75.  It has the label from a fancy store and everything.  No questions asked.  After hemming and hawing, Larry decided to buy the coat.  Surprisingly, his girlfriend was not crazy about the gift, and thought it was only worth a fraction of that.  Maybe the only thing valuable was the label.  So Larry needs help to figure out what he has purchased.  Time to get Mike Waring on the line.  Or better yet, visit him in person.
So what started out was a Christmas scam, turned into a serious case.  All of a sudden, people are looking all over for that coat.  Offering even as much as $1000 for the coat.  But what is the real value of the coat?  And how will Mike Waring (or the Falcon) save the day.  Just keep in mind that sometimes, a gift box is more valuable than the contents.
